I used a wire brush, like you clean a grill, and water, and just cleaned around the openings, as that was the worst part, and it scratched the stone.  The fireplace, like the house, is 180 years old.  I thought when it dried, it would go away, but it didn't.  Have tried various cleaners, steam, etc and nothing is taking away the scratches.  How do I buff them out?
